South Coast Weighing Days

Monday, April 21st, 2008

With the new class rules published, many of you are now keen to know how to go about weighing your boats. Three weighing days have been scheduled in Hamble on the following dates:

Friday 2nd May – day prior to Cowes G.P.
Saturday 10th May – No SB3 racing
Sunday 11th May – No SB3 racing

The Royal Southern Yacht Club have extremely generously agreed to allow the class use of their crane for this exercise. The normal rate for anybody who wishes to use the crane for launching and recovering is £100.00 but we have negotiated this down to £20.00 for non-members and non-dry berth holders (cash to be paid on the day). If you do not have a dry berth at the Royal Southern Y.C. you will need to arrive at the Club by water – there is no provision for bringing your boat to the Club by road – sorry.

All boats must arrive at the Royal Southern Y.C. fully prepared for weighing (see attached document). Please leave all extra equipment (sails/kite bags etc etc) at your berthing location – please do not bring excess kit to the Royal Southern. Please strip your boat and dry it out below as best you can before departing for the Royal Southern. Please bring an old towel with you to dry off your boat prior to weighting.

If you need to add lead to your boat, to bring it inline with the rule, please not that lead will not be available on the weighing day and you will need to source this.

It is ESSENTIAL that all boats book a time slot for weighing on these dates. Weighing appointments are to be booked with Jerry Hill who has very kindly offered to co-ordinate these sessions. Please e-mail Jerry to book a slot – NOT ME! jerry.hill@btint ernet.com If you have any queries regarding weighing, please contact Colin Simonds, UK Class Measurer, colinthinkplay@btinternet.com

Remember – you must have your boat weighed prior to the Nationals in June and the Worlds in September! Additional weighing days will be set up in due course, but please make every effort to attend on these dates if you possibly can.

Warsash Spring Champs Preview

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

After a relatively gentle start to the season (1st weekend aside) with the Raymarine Warsah Spring Series this weekend will see the number of entries jump for the first weekend of the SB3 Spring Championships run within the main Raymarine Warsah Spring Series. This will be the first outing for much of the fleet ahead of the rest of the 2008 season which continues with the second Spring Championship weekend on the 26/27th April and the first Grand Prix event being hosted by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Cowes over the May Day bank holiday weekend.

The long term forecast looks like the conditions could be pretty exciting for the weekend so we can look forward some top quality racing. This year Warsash Sailing Club have given the SB3`s their own committee boat and race course which has worked extremely well, no more waiting around after the inevitable general recalls and so far a restrained use of the black flag by the PRO. Lets hope the fleet can repay this efficient race management with an adherence to the rules around the cans.

Raymarine Warsash Spring Series – Take 3!

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

After a weekend off courtesy of the blizzard which took over the Solent last weekend, an additional race was scheduled for this weekend.  With boat numbers up, there were clearly a couple of boats out dusting off the cobwebs before the first of the spring championship weekends next weekend.

Following a nasty rain squall just before the start of the first race, the wind seriously dropped off just before the first race however this did not deter Ian Southworth in Chilli Chaser taking an early lead  followed by Craig Burlton’s Team Touareg and Matt Davies helming Impact Promotions.

The start of the second race saw a large number of boats over the line on the first start so PRO: Peter Knight  dusted off the black flag to encourage better behavior for the second attempt. After a clean start  ChilliChaser took the lead  closely followed by Palava helmed by Sarah Allen this week and David Cummins’ Rumbleflurg.

Yet again the middle of the fleet saw some appalling lack of adherence to the rules in particular at mark rounding and with lots of boats entered for the spring championships next weekend it would be opportune to brush up on the rules this week!!! The breeze picked up for the third race and Chilli Chaser delivered the third bullet of the day followed by Team Touareg and Mark Rushall in Risk Premium.

Looking forward to seeing you again and more on the water for the Spring Championships – if you’ve not already entered, get in touch with Warsash Sailing Club – PRONTO!!!

SB3 Speed Clinic – Hamble

Monday, April 14th, 2008

The SB3 Speed Clinic at the Hamble, over the weekend of 5-6th April was deemed a huge success by all who attended. With top class coaches, Mark Rushall and Olympic medallist, Chris Draper, they provided logical advice on how to get these boats moving faster.

Every sailor was shown top tips ashore from the coaches and then put this into practise on the water.

SailLaser, who organised this event, are looking to run another training weekend in the Hamble in the autumn, focused on boat-handling- so keep your eye on www.sail-laser.com for more information, or to register your interest now!

“The training on Saturday was first class, being from the midlands it would have taken us a year to pick up the tips from the circuit.” Bruce Hendon

“Thanks for weekend – found it extremely useful. Thank you also for getting me out on the RIB with Mark as gave me insight from looking at sail shapes and trim etc that would not normally get.” Mark Stokes
